HAVANA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Cuba reported on Monday 1,561 new COVID-19 infections in the last day, the highest daily number since the start of the pandemic on the island, bringing to 169,365 the confirmed cases, the Ministry of Public Health said, also reporting 11 more deaths, for a total of 1,170.
The Caribbean country reported 8,364 active cases, the highest number in 15 months, while 1,511 of the total number of infections registered in the last day were from community transmission, also the highest figure so far.
Although Havana still has the most infections on the island, the focus of transmission has moved to the neighboring province of Artemisa.
Meanwhile, the ministry has expanded its vaccination campaign in the capital this week, hoping to inoculate the entire population of 2.2 million people by the end of July.
The drive also continues in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud.
Currently, over 4.8 million doses of Cuban vaccine candidates Abdala and Soberana-02 have been administered, with over 2.2 million Cubans receiving at least one dose.
